Steps in Flowerhorn fish breeding:
- First choose the parents carefully as their traits will reflect in the fries produced. Look for features like the kok size, coloration, dark spots and glowing spots and choose the best pair.
-Keep them separated in a aquarium separated by a transparent divider.
- Feed the fish thrice daily with quality food as it will determine the production of healthy eggs and milt.
- Adjust the temperature to 29 degree C/ 82 degree F and maintain a neutral pH.
- DO NOT USE ANY FILTRATION SYSTEM as the eggs will be sucked in. Provide airation using a simple air stone.
- Decorate the aquarium with rocks and provide hiding places for the female as the male may turn aggressive during mating.
- Provide a smooth plate in the aquarium for the female to lay its eggs on.
- Give the aquarium water an anti-fungal treatment. Many anti-fungal solutions for aquarium are available in the market.
- First the male will show aggression. once the aggression subsides it is time to remove the divider.
- Then the mating will take place. The female will lay its eggs on the plate or it may choose any other smooth surface.
- The male will fertilize the eggs with its milt.
-The eggs will hatch in a few days. once the eggs hatch the parents should be removed and proper fry management should be practiced.
